September often sees an extension of August sunshine, coupled with lovely crisp autumnal evenings and morning mists.

At the start of September the Yorkshire Air Museum holds its annual Allied Forces Memorial Day, a moving gathering of veteran, current and training service personnel commemorating the sacrifice of Allied aircrews across the history of aviation.

The September Sunday Family Raceday meet sees horseracing again at York Racecourse mid-month.

Mid-way through the month is the York National Premier Book Fair, the UK’s largest rare, antiquarian and out-of-print book fair, at York Racecourse with a vast number of exciting second-hand books for sale.

Later on in September, York’s Food and Drink Festival takes over the city for 10 days with amazing markets, special events and cookery demonstrations from Yorkshire’s star chefs.

The month ends with North York Moors Railway Annual Steam Gala with a selection of guest and steam-based locomotives running through the beautiful moorland landscape and a beer festival and right in the city at the Knavesmire there is the York Balloon Fiesta. Watching dozens of hot air balloons take to the air is a magical sight and there is also a Victorian funfair, live music, a beer tent and tasty Yorkshire street food.
